Azores/São Miguel Island
Through the topography of the Azorean Islands it is visible the incredible force of nature that shaped the landscape, sometimes in a gentle rip, others in an impetuous way from the ocean depths. An unstoppable rise of energy release, yielding a sketch where black basalt carved from the fiery lava prevails.
Completed the drawing, it is time to give life to the screen wrapped in the Atlantic blue, as if it were, artist´s brushstrokes. The painting is filled with life. A miscellany of colors and smells that emanate from the virgin forest with unique species, forming a complex ecosystem, providing ideal conditions for the habitat of fauna, also with unique characteristics. Insects, bats, birds find the ideal conditions and establish. Others discover the ideal place to nest, while others use the islands as stopover sites through their migratory routes.
Millions of years passed by and a people born from the sea populated these islands. Suffering, fearing, resisting they earned the right to live in them. Honoring nature, these people transformed the landscape of these mist islands blessed by rain. From this settlement was born a very peculiar culture rooted in each individual´s core, that nowadays proliferates a bit throughout the world.
The following generations have the obligation to preserve, respect, enhance and show the world how precious is the nature that surrounds us.
With approximately 747 Km2 the Island of São Miguel, also called the Green Island, is the largest of the nine islands that form the archipelago of the Azores. Full of natural beauty it is a prime example of the enchantment that the Azores has to offer.
